TRENT’S BIRTHDAY. Jack might have been a fanboy, but that particular scrap of information had long since left his memory, if he’d even known it. He’d thought Devlin had seemed… off in the lab yesterday but hadn’t given it another thought, and he hated himself for that.
Devlin had been silent long enough that Jack assumed there would be no more revelations. Honestly, though, Jack didn’t know if his heart could stand anything else. He’d thought his one-night stand with a drunken Devlin had been heart-wrenching, but he simply hadn’t known the meaning of the term back then. Devlin and alcohol made a dangerous combination, in completely unexpected ways.
The heater didn’t make up for having Devlin curled around him as much as humanly possible with the center console in the way, and Jack found himself slightly chilled. Having Devlin all touchy-feely, nuzzling him, and even comforting him had felt so fucking good that it bordered on tortuous. Under the bourbon haze, Devlin had also smelled good, and before the tears had started, Jack had been sorely tempted to revisit that night four years ago. But last time, they had both been drunk; with only Devlin drunk and their new status as professor and student, it would have been an unforgivable lapse, taking advantage in the worst way.
But then Devlin told him about Trent. Jack hadn’t known they’d been friends so long. Hadn’t considered—but should have—how devastating the loss of Trent had to have been, for the whole band and Devlin in particular. He was an utter fucking dick, once again failing to recognize Devlin as a human being. As he’d held Devlin, he’d cried too, unable to help himself. His eyes still burned, but they couldn’t be as bloodshot as Devlin’s.
The aneurysm hadn’t been publicized anywhere that Jack knew of. He had to admit, he’d assumed an overdose as well, and he was ashamed for it.
“C’mon, buckle up. Let’s get you home to sleep this off.”
“You don’t have to drive me home.”
“Devlin, seriously, I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t see you safely home.”
Fucking hell. Jack hadn’t even considered, not once, that it had been less than a year since Trent died. That Devlin had been knocking around, looking for direction, seeking new friends, and still grieving. If Jack hadn’t found him at Ciao, he didn’t want to think about how this night might have gone for Devlin. Alcohol and grief could be a lethal combination.
Even worse, the only people in the world, aside from Trent’s family—assuming he had any left—who could understand Devlin’s grief were the other band members, and Devlin wouldn’t let himself find comfort with them. Jesus Christ. Jack’s eyes burned again, and he surreptitiously swiped at them with his sleeve.
He was so fucking glad he’d found Devlin tonight. Devlin had been in desperate need of a friend, and Jack was happy to fill that role.
“It’s far.” The silence had gone on so long that Jack had thought for a moment Devlin had fallen asleep. Or passed out.
